Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 239 [South Bank: Waterloo Bridge, Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Road and Shell offices — obsolete copy]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 239, covers the South Bank at the Royal Festival Hall (SE1). This is the superseded edition, marked obsolete, and it records the arrival of postwar London's riverside institutions. The Royal Festival Hall opened in 1951 and the National Film Theatre beneath Waterloo Bridge in 1957, while the Shell complex was completed in 1961 and is shown in place on the sheet. The Festival Hall was renovated between 2005 and 2007 and still fills its original role. Shell's lower wings, by contrast, came down in 2015 for the homes and offices of Southbank Place, leaving the tower standing. These plans were produced to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction identified is a vacancy note of March 1962 on the arches between Road No. 4 and Waterloo Road. A replacement edition, reissued in March 1965, accommodates the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward development on the previously open plot, which places the end of this sheet's updating at about 1965. Other streets on the sheet include Belvedere Road, Sutton Walk and Tenison Way.
