Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 403 [Camden Town: Camden High Street, Kentish Town Road, Camden Road and Regent's Canal]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 403, covers Camden Town along Camden High Street and Regent's Canal (NW1). The sheet is centred on Rowton House of 1905, which was the last and largest of the Rowton Houses for working men. Today the building serves a kindred purpose as Arlington House, which reopened in June 2010 after rebuilding and provides supported accommodation for homeless adults, training and employment support, affordable flats and office space. The canalside has been unrecognisable since Hawley Wharf opened in August 2021, though Hawley Locks, Kentish Town Lock, the railway viaduct and St Martin's Gardens remain fixed points. Clothing and hat manufacture, scientific-instrument making, frozen-food premises and workshops beneath the railway reveal Camden's varied production and storage economy. Hawley Wharf's later combination of homes, market space, a cinema, workspace and workshops shows how part of this industrial district has been adapted to a broader mixture of living, leisure and work. On the sheet itself, the road-making materials depot label names the London Borough of Camden, which was formed in April 1965. The plan was made for fire-risk assessment and carried pasted revisions recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its latest dated correction is a vacancy note at 47-49 Kentish Town Road, dated February 1970. The printed base heading is dated March 1891, with a 1951 copyright date, and a key plan for South London from the same group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Camden Road, Chalk Farm Road, Castlehaven Road, Hawley Road, Hawley Crescent, Jamestown Road, Inverness Street, Buck Street, Parkway, Greenland Road, Georgiana Street and Royal College Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume XII. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Size excludes the tab at the side. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 402 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
