Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 46 [Farringdon Station, Farringdon Road, Cowcross Street and Charterhouse Street]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 46, covers Farringdon Station and Cowcross Street (EC1), where the world's first underground railway met the wholesale food trade. At the time, cold storage and market distribution were prominent beside the railway, represented by Union Cold Storage and by the London Central Markets, with its fruit and vegetable market and cold store. The General Market is now empty and is being converted for London Museum, which is due to open from November 2026. The plan still labels the station Farringdon & High Holborn, a name that was dropped in 1936, and it marks the Metropolitan Railway, which opened here in 1863. The station's expansion for the Elizabeth line, which opened in 2022, put the emphasis on carrying passengers across London, and Cowcross Street has been rebuilt and pedestrianised. Goad's plans were compiled so that insurers could rate property and fire risk, and they were maintained with pasted overlays noting changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in January 1962, with a 1962 copyright date, and it carries a latest dated correction of September 1969. Key plans acquired with the group were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Farringdon Road, Turnmill Street, Benjamin Street, Britton Street and Charterhouse Street.
