Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 56 [Fenchurch Street, Mincing Lane, Eastcheap and Clothworkers' Hall]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 56, covers Fenchurch Street, Mincing Lane and Mark Lane (EC3), then the City's commodity-trading heart. In the sheet's day, Plantation House of 1935 held the machinery of that trade in its Commodity Exchange, tea auction room and sample rooms. London's last tea auction was held on 29 June 1998, once the producing countries were selling their own crops, and the building gave way to Plantation Place in 2004. Clothworkers' Hall appears here enlarged to show the 1958 rebuilding that followed its predecessor's destruction in 1941. The rebuilt hall is itself now consented for demolition as part of a scheme, approved in May 2020, for a 35-storey tower with a seventh livery hall beneath it. Wren's St Margaret Pattens of 1687 survives today as a guild church, and the sheet also names St Olave's Parish Hall, Dunster House, Lloyds Bank and Norwich Union, which has traded as Aviva since 2009. These plans were made to rate fire risk, and they took pasted overlays for new occupiers, altered layouts and demolition. The latest dated correction, from July 1968, marks 43–45 Eastcheap as vacant at the Rood Lane corner. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1953, with a 1953 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Great Tower Street also crosses the sheet.
