Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 8 [Ludgate Hill, Ludgate Circus, Old Bailey and Farringdon Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 8, covers Ludgate Circus and Farringdon Street (EC4) from the days when the railway still rode over the street. The Holborn Viaduct Station railway approaches dominate the sheet, with railway arches and workshops beneath them. The viaduct and bridge across Ludgate Hill were demolished in 1990 so that the line could run in tunnel to City Thameslink, and their removal cleared a major obstruction. On Farringdon Street, the Congregational Memorial Hall of 1875, where the Labour Party was founded in 1900, came down in 1968. Caroone House replaced it in 1972 and was itself demolished in 2004, to be followed by 5 Fleet Place in 2007. The sheet also names the Sun Life Assurance offices, a London Electricity Board substation, Hillgate House and Modern Court. The plan was compiled for fire-risk assessment and kept up to date with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its later vacancy annotations, of November 1970, are the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1960, with a 1960 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Fleet Lane, Old Seacoal Lane, Seacoal Lane, Old Bailey, New Bridge Street and Pilgrim Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 7 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
