Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet D48 [Islington: Brewery Road, Blundell Street and Caledonian Road]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet D48, covers Brewery Road and Caledonian Road (N7), then an Islington of small works still changing trades. At the time, Woburn photographic studios, S. R. Littlejohn engineering works, the Richardson-Merrell chemical warehouse, Arc-Art Metal Craft works and British Insulated Callender's Construction stores filled Brewery Road, Blundell Street and St George's Yard. A chemical sundries warehouse, computer system engineers and theatrical scenery workshops were there too. Robert Blair Primary School is still open on Brewery Road, and St Matthias Church of 1868 became a chapel of ease to St Andrew, Thornhill Square, in 1956. Market Road Gardens, which has been in council hands since 1900, now carries a column of cut-out cattle recalling the Metropolitan Cattle Market. Fire risk was priced from plans such as this, which were kept current by overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated corrections are from October 1969. Garage and repair premises south of Brewery Road, in block D107, are marked 'Vacant over Oct '69', and the frontage at No. 7 Brewery Road is marked 'Vacant Oct '69'. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1951, with a 1951 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Balmoral Grove also appears on the sheet.
