'Hand map of Swatow.'
A street-and-harbour plan of Swatow (Shantou) during its first years as a treaty port, showing the Han River waterfront opposite the British Consulate and jetty at Kakchio. Bradley & Co.’s jetty, an old fort, pilot station, fishing stakes and the low-water line record the practical workings of the port. Swatow opened under the Treaty of Tientsin, with British and American consuls arriving in 1860. It had been a small settlement serving Chaozhou, thirty-five miles inland. Foreign merchants previously used Double Island as an unrecognised opium station. Attempts to lease a settlement failed amid local hostility in 1862, leaving the fragmented foreign presence mapped here. Nevertheless, Dennys recorded 1,169 vessel entries totalling 444,056 tons and trade worth about $13.3 million in 1865. Sugar exports alone reached 529,487 piculs. Other exports included tobacco and paper; beancake, cotton goods and opium came in. Published in 1867, the plan predates modern Shantou’s absorption of these river margins. Exceptionally scarce: our research located no other separate dealer or auction record for this map.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us. If you have changed your mind, you are responsible for the cost of returning the item to us. We describe the size, age and condition of all our products as fully and accurately as possible.
