'Map 4 —Kenya: Boundaries, Land Units, Population, Tsetse Fly and Rainfall'
The Royal Commission’s detailed planning map of Kenya at 1:2,000,000 combines rainfall reliability, population, tsetse infestation and communications with forest reserves, national parks, Native Land Units, alienated land and the settler Highlands. Each population dot represents 5,000 people; towns give total and African populations. Colour grades the prospect of obtaining 20 inches of annual rain, separating potentially cultivable country from predominantly pastoral land, while tsetse hatching identifies zones where disease restricted people and livestock. “Alienated land” meant land granted or leased by the colonial government, mainly to non-African settlers, rather than land remaining under African customary tenure or as unallocated Crown land. The map was designed to show potentially productive land in relation to Kenya’s racial and administrative boundaries. Prepared during the Mau Mau Emergency, it starkly reveals a political geography contributing to the rebellion: crowded African land units beside comparatively lightly populated, high-potential areas within the European-reserved Highlands.
