'L'Itinéraire des Tours de France 1965 - Le Miroir des Sports'
The 1965 Tour de France, held from June 22 to July 14, covered 4,177 km over 22 stages, starting in Cologne—the first time the Tour began in Germany, and only the third time it began outside France. The route included flat stages, mountain climbs in the Alps and Pyrenees, and an individual time trial. The 1965 Tour saw the emergence of Felice Gimondi, an Italian rider who made a remarkable Tour debut. Just 22 years old, Gimondi seized the lead in Stage 3 and maintained it through to Paris, ultimately winning the general classification. Gimondi went on to become one of only seven riders to win all three of the major Tours. The favourite, Frenchman Raymond Poulidor, was again unable to secure victory, finishing second, with Italian Gianni Motta third. Jan Janssen successfully defended his points title, and Julio Jiménez won the first of three consecutive mountains classification.
