[La Carte-Guide programme du Tour 1948] Tour de France 1948
A vivid pictorial record map for the 1948 Tour de France, only the second post-war edition of the race, designed for spectators to complete as the race progressed. A bold route line follows the twenty-one stages from Paris through Trouville, Dinard, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Biarritz, Lourdes, Toulouse, Montpellier, Marseille, San Remo, Cannes, Briancon, Aix-les-Bains, Lausanne, Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Metz, Liège and Roubaix before returning to Paris. Border panels combine stage details, cumulative distances, miniature elevation profiles and blank tables for recording leaders, times and averages; a separate box was reserved for a photograph of the winner. Across France, lively cartoons depict riders, team cars, spectators, regional customs, animals and comic incidents, centred upon a monumental racing cyclist. The printed cumulative distance is 4,857 kilometres and the final stage is dated 25 July. All result spaces and the photograph panel remain unused. Credited "Réalisation André Gosselin. Illustrée par Foré" (Philippe Fauré) and printed in Paris by the Société d’Impressions de Lancry, it is an unusually decorative and well preserved survivor from Gino Bartali’s celebrated 1948 victory.
