'Le Colonie Unite dell America Settentrale di nuova projezione assee li Signori Rifomatori dello Studio di Padova'
The title sheet of a twelve sheet map of the "United Colonies of the North America" (shortly afterwards to become the United States - the map was published in the middle of the American War of Independence). Bermuda is shown on a trompe-l'oeil scroll. The map contains an interesting cartographic error which reveals that Zatta copied it from Richard Norwood's earlier map, compiled in 1622 and published by John Speed in 1627. Norwood's original map superimposed the North American Atlantic seaboard together with the relative position of Bermuda on a smaller scale behind the main large-scale representation of Bermuda. Thus, there was a repetition of the island of Bermuda on the original Norwood map, on two very different scales. Zatta has failed to understand that the small island shown offshore what is now North Shore Village, and named on his map nearly identically to the main island as "Bermudos or Sommers Island", does not exist and is in fact a repetition and representation of Bermuda itself on a smaller scale - in the same position in which it appeared on Norwood's map. Bermuda was at one time named "Sommers' island", after Sir George Sommers, who was shipwrecked there in 1609.
