'London Bridge with the houses on it—London Bridge as re-edified—Blackfriars Bridge—Westminster Bridge'
Old London Bridge crowded with houses, and the same bridge stripped bare a few years later: the upper two of these four engraved views record a great transformation of Georgian London. T. White engraved the sheet for John Noorthouck’s A New History of London (1773), setting the medieval bridge, its houses overhanging the piers, above the bridge ‘as re-edified’ after the buildings were cleared in 1758–62 and the two central arches thrown into one great span. Beneath are the two new crossings that ended its long reign as London’s only bridge: Robert Mylne’s Blackfriars Bridge, completed in 1769, and Westminster Bridge, opened in 1750. All four are drawn in long elevation on a single folding plate, so the bridges can be compared arch for arch.
