'Map of Dublin Specially Drawn for Third Edition Sinn Fein Rebellion Handbook compiled by the Irish Times'
An antique colour city plan of Dublin, offered together with the accompanying 286-page Sinn Féin Rebellion Handbook, providing a detailed contemporary record of the 1916 Easter Rising, a defining event of modern Irish history. The map identifies the principal sites of fighting, occupation and other key events during the insurrection, including the General Post Office, Four Courts, Boland’s Mill, Jacob’s Biscuit Factory, St Stephen’s Green, as well as major barracks and hospitals, clearly situating the events of Easter Week within the city’s street plan. The accompanying handbook presents a connected narrative of the Rising and its aftermath, with detailed accounts of the fighting at each location, official military and rebel proclamations, despatches, casualty lists, courts-martial and sentences, internments and releases, commissions of inquiry, relief efforts and photographs. Issued shortly after the Rising, the map and book together form a significant contemporary documentary record of the event that catalysed Irish Independence.
