A plan of Fuzhou’s expanding tea port, showing the walled city, Nantai river suburb, Chung-chow island and bridges, and foreign compounds on the Min’s southern hills. The walls enclosed three celebrated hills and extended for six to seven miles. Numbered residences, lettered hongs and a distance table identify consular, missionary and mercantile premises. Opened by the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, Foochow offered direct access to Fujian black teas previously sent overland to Canton. Exports accelerated after an American firm established interior connections in 1855. Dennys counted about fifty foreign merchants and over one hundred foreign residents in 1865; tea exports reached 66 million lb in 1865–66, roughly two-thirds destined for Britain. A branch of the Oriental Bank and the Foochow Advertiser appeared in 1866. Ocean-going vessels stopped at Pagoda Anchorage, ten miles downstream; passengers continued by local boat to the consulate and hongs opposite Nantai. Separate examples are exceptionally scarce: our research located two 2010 records apparently relating to one relisted sheet, and a distinct auction example sold in 2022.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us. If you have changed your mind, you are responsible for the cost of returning the item to us. We describe the size, age and condition of all our products as fully and accurately as possible. Most of the items which we sell are in very good condition. However, the condition of antique and vintage prints and maps can vary.
