'Map of Godalming and its Vicinity'

An unattributed and apparently unrecorded map of Godalming and its environs, depicting the town and surrounding villages across south-west Surrey. North-west orientated, the map extends from Witley and Hambledon Heath in the south to Guildford in the north, and from Thursley Common and Puttenham in the west to Bramley and Shalford in the east. The Hog’s Back runs prominently across the upper right of the map. Several chalk pits are shown, indicating the chalk soils of the region—today increasingly associated with English sparkling wine production—with one pit marked on the present site of Greyfriars Vineyard. The map records the local road network, rivers and streams, commons and woodland, scattered farms and country houses, and the built fabric of Godalming and its district, which is subdivided into named areas keyed by Roman numerals. Finely engraved with original outline colour, it is mounted on linen and folded into cloth boards, suggesting practical local use. Undated, but on stylistic and cartographic grounds it most likely dates from no later than c.1830. The map bears a striking stylistic resemblance to Robert Dawson’s borough maps prepared for the 1832 Reform Act, although Guildford appears here in a less developed state than on Dawson’s 1832 plan of the borough, and Godalming in a slightly less developed state than Dawson's 1837 map.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
