'Map of the Island of Jamaica to accompany Dr. Johnston’s Illustrated Guide Book. Prepared under the Direction of Thomas Harrison, Govt Surveyor, by Colin Liddell. 1895.'
A detailed colour-printed map of Jamaica, prepared by Colin Liddell under the direction of Thomas Harrison, Government Surveyor, to accompany Dr Johnston’s Illustrated Guide Book. The island is divided into its three historic counties—Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey—and their constituent parishes, distinguished by contrasting colour. Railways and stations, main and parochial roads, towns and villages, post offices, churches and chapels, district court stations, estates and settlements, swamps and irrigation canals are recorded in considerable detail. Hachuring conveys the mountainous character of the interior, while the dense naming of rivers, bays, headlands, upland districts and coastal settlements provides a particularly informative picture of Jamaica at the close of the nineteenth century. Printed by Stanford’s Geographical Establishment in 1895, the map combines the precision of an official survey with the attractive colouring and practical detail required by contemporary travellers.
