'Outline Map of Indian Localities in 1833'
Catlin’s Outline Map of Indian Localities in 1833 provides the geographical key to North American Indians, locating Indigenous nations during the period of his western travels, and the then range of the North American Buffalo. Its value lies less in surveyed precision than in the broad contemporary picture it offers of Native homelands, river systems and the cultural geography behind Catlin’s portraits, ceremonies and village scenes. The map directs readers to compare it with his 1840 frontier map, after removal had accelerated: together, the two sheets make the rapid displacement of communities west of the Mississippi visually legible. Names and territorial positions reflect Catlin’s nineteenth-century knowledge and should be read critically, but the map remains an important documentary companion to the work. This example was colour-reprinted from the original plate around 1892.
