'Palestine: Political'
The proposed partition line shown on this February 1944 map of Palestine, produced by the Serial Map Service, is based on the 1937 Peel Commission plan. This was the first official British proposal to partition Mandatory Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, with a British-controlled corridor around Jerusalem. The map's boundary closely follows the Peel Plan's outline—allocating the coastal plain and parts of Galilee to a Jewish state, central hills and the south to an Arab state, and retaining Jerusalem and the Jaffa–Jerusalem corridor under British control. The map's inclusion of Jewish-owned land and cultivation zones likely served to support the rationale for the proposed borders. The 1937 plan was rejected by Arab leaders and only conditionally accepted by Zionist representatives, and the outbreak of World War Two halted further developments toward a Jewish homeland. Within months of this map’s publication, evidence of the Holocaust began to emerge, strengthening international support for the eventual creation of a Jewish state in the war’s aftermath.
