'Piccadilly, from the Haymarket to Hyde Park Corner'
A perspective map view of part of Piccadilly through St. James's and Mayfair from the Haymarket to Hyde Park Corner, depicting the celebrated thoroughfare running between Regent Street and the great Royal Parks. At the lower edge stand the Criterion Theatre, Regent (now Piccadilly) Circus and the Quadrant, with Regent Street and Jermyn Street branching off to the south. Moving westward, landmarks include the Burlington Arcade, Burlington House with the Royal Academy of Arts, the Albany, Prince's Hall and the Colosseum. Clubs and institutions such as the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the London Library are also shown, together with St James’s Church, Piccadilly. To the north lie Mayfair squares and streets including Berkeley Square, Lansdowne House, Curzon Street, Chesterfield House, the Dorchester Hotel and Wharncliffe House, while to the south stand St James’s Square, Swallow Street and Green Park. The vista culminates with Hyde Park Corner, Apsley House, Hamilton Place and the southern end of Park Lane, with Hyde Park and Green Park framing the route. The map combines architectural detail with a clear alignment of streets, underlining Piccadilly’s role as both a cultural and social centre and as the ceremonial avenue leading from the theatres and shops of the West End to the aristocratic clubs and residences of St James’s and Mayfair.
