'Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse'
This mid-19th-century map of Plymouth, engraved by J. Rapkin with vignettes by H. Bibby, was published in John Tallis’s Illustrated Atlas (c.1855). It features detailed depictions of Plymouth, Devonport, and Stonehouse, showing railroads, ramparts, and key buildings. Decorative vignettes illustrate Plymouth Sound, The Column, and Plymouth Harbour. Plymouth has played a significant role in European and World history: the English fleet set sail from here in 1588 to defeat the Spanish Armada, and in 1620 it was the departure point for the Pilgrim Fathers voyage in the Mayflower to the New World. The city has hosted a Royal Naval Dockyard since 1690; it remains the largest operational naval base in Western Europe to this day. Tallis’s maps are prized for their decorative style, making this plan, found only in later editions of the atlas, particularly collectible.
