'Plan and Section of Proposed Thames Embankment and Railway with a public carriage road from Whitehall to Blackfriars'
By 1855 there had been many proposals to embank the Thames, the first of which by Sir Christopher Wren. This map shows Henry Bird's proposed scheme which included leaving many of the existing wharves and warehouses in place, with floating and tidal docks behind the embankment. He proposed that a railway should run inshore of the public road. The Embankment of the Thames was eventually constructed from 1862 to the design of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, with a railway (the District Line) running under the road.
