'England—East Coast—River Thames—Richmond to London Bridge'
A detailed British Admiralty chart of the River Thames covering the tidal reach from Richmond downstream to London Bridge, produced from surveys by the Port of London Authority to 1931. The chart provides a continuous, carefully engraved plan of the river’s course and meanders through west and central London, extending past Brentford, Chiswick, Barnes, Hammersmith, Putney, Wandsworth, Fulham, Battersea, Westminster, Lambeth, and into the historic Pool of London. Soundings, navigational aids, wharves, docks, bridges, embankments, and river infrastructure are shown with the clarity typical of Admiralty production, reflecting the Thames’ importance as both a commercial waterway and a navigational channel. Circular tidal and bearing diagrams are included, together with extensive tabulated information relating to bridges, distances, and river characteristics. Urban development along both banks is densely rendered, offering a valuable snapshot of London’s riverside landscape in the early 1930s. Published at the Admiralty under the superintendence of Vice-Admiral H. P. Douglas, and sold by J. D. Potter, official agent for Admiralty charts at 145 Minories, this chart represents a mature pre-war state of the Thames immediately prior to later mid-century redevelopment. An impressive and authoritative large-scale river chart, appealing both to collectors of Admiralty material and to those interested in the historical topography of London and the Thames.
