'Silver Mine Bay / 銀礦灣—Sheet 10 Hong Kong—Series HM20C'
A richly detailed colour map of eastern Lantau at 1:20,000, published just as the island began a period of extraordinary change. Contours and spot heights model the mountainous interior, while villages, paths, roads, ferry connections and the intricate shoreline lead the eye from Silver Mine Bay and Mui Wo to Discovery Bay, Penny’s Bay, Peng Chau and Ma Wan. Its date is particularly resonant: Discovery Bay’s first residential phase went on sale in 1980, yet the surrounding transport and resort landscape remained at an early stage. Penny’s Bay retains the coast later remade by reclamation for Hong Kong Disneyland, opened in 2005; the sheet also predates the Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Mun bridges, North Lantau Highway, airport railway and Discovery Bay tunnel. The airport itself now lies west of this sheet. HM20C was the Government’s general-purpose colour series, used by schools, hikers and scouts as well as ordinary map readers. This second-edition Sheet 10 combines immediate local nostalgia with a particularly clear before-and-after record of Lantau’s modern transformation.
