'Spithead - Review of the Fleet by His Majesty the King - 20th May 1937'
The Spithead Review of the Fleet on 20th May 1937 was a grand ceremonial display held off Portsmouth to mark the coronation of King George VI. Over 150 Royal Navy vessels—including battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and submarines—assembled to be reviewed by the King in a tradition symbolising sovereign authority and maritime power. Coming just months after the abdication crisis, the event reaffirmed national stability while reasserting Britain's naval might. It took place against a backdrop of growing international tension, with the rise of fascist powers in Europe and the looming threat of another major conflict, making the show of strength both ceremonial and a strategic reminder to Nazi Germany of Britain's maritime reach.
