'The County of Lanark from Actual Survey by Willm. Forrest'
An exceptionally large and detailed pre-Ordnance Survey map of historic Lanarkshire, surveyed by William Forrest and engraved by J. & G. Menzies. Printed in two vast folding sections, it records parish boundaries, roads, settlements, estates, individual buildings, rivers and relief across the county. Glasgow, Hamilton, Lanark, New Lanark and the Clyde valley are represented in remarkable detail. Statistical tables record parish populations, distances from Glasgow and the heights of principal hills, while buildings are shown pictorially. The elaborate title appears within a radiant sunburst amid clouds, complemented by an ornate dedication to Alexander, Marquis of Douglas and Clydesdale. A monumental Georgian county survey, predating the first Ordnance Survey mapping of Lanarkshire by more than forty years, preserved in folding format and its original slipcase.
