India Showing Provinces, States & Districts [70-Mile Map, India, Second Edition]
A defining cartographic document of Partition and Independence: the first official Survey of India map of independent India, and the first official post-Partition map to show India and Pakistan as separate dominions. Although marked “Second Edition”, this was no routine reprint: the first edition was the pre-war imperial map of 1938, while this 1947 edition recasts the same administrative framework after the transfer of power. The new Pakistan boundary — the Radcliffe Line — is picked out in green, yet the legend pointedly states that the Indo-Pakistan boundary was “not demarcated as an international boundary” and was drawn only according to the best information available. Provinces, districts, tribal areas and princely states are shown as they stood at the end of British India, with Bahawalpur and Khairpur already shown as acceded to Pakistan. The map’s frontier significance extends beyond Partition: the western and middle China boundary remains undefined, while the eastern sector follows the McMahon Line. A rare official image of decolonisation in real time — provisional, administrative, and charged with the territorial disputes that would shape South Asia for decades.
