Published four weeks after the Anschluss and thirteen days before the Carlsbad demands sharpened the Sudeten crisis, the LIFE spread reproduces Wilhelm Winkler’s 1921 Pan-German Sprachenkarte von Mitteleuropa as “The Key Nazi Map of a Greater Germany.” John Phillips’s 17 March photograph shows Nazis displaying the map in Vienna as propaganda. Its banner, “Deutsches Selbstbestimmungsrecht!” (“German right of self-determination”), and shaded language areas and white state boundaries purport to substantiate Germany’s claim that Versailles and Saint-Germain divided the “German peoples” among twelve states and denied more than fifteen million Germans reunion with the “Motherland.” LIFE presents it as a territorial programme exploiting post-war resentment to justify Nazi expansion. It calls German claims to two-thirds of Switzerland and most of Alsace-Lorraine “wildly absurd,” but finds much more immediate and ominous “the German tide lapping the western boundaries of Czechoslovakia”—a warning before the Sudetenland’s cession at Munich that September.

Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order.
