'The Map of Peace—Keep on Saving, we've great things to do'
A lively post-war pictorial map exhorting the viewer to invest in a eutopian future for Britain in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. Produced after the achievement of peace, it looks beyond wartime sacrifice towards reconstruction and prosperity, promoting continued saving as the foundation of a better future. The map presents a wholly invented landscape populated by symbolic place-names such as Prosperton, Market Dean, Toddler Regis, Picnic Bay, Cricketers Green, Ironbridge, and Mariners Sound, together representing a harmonious balance of industry, agriculture, transport, and leisure. Factories and farms operate productively yet benignly, while safe, friendly railways recall the comforting imagery of children’s steam engines. Leisure and everyday pleasures dominate the scene: picnics, seaside outings, rowing, fishing, cycling, and cricket on the village green all feature prominently. Happy families and bustling towns convey a sense of security, continuity, and social wellbeing. Framed by verse and the slogan “Keep on Saving – We’ve great things to do”, the map presents peace as something to be actively maintained through collective effort and optimism, making it a vivid expression of Britain’s hopeful post-war mood.
