'The Pedestrian’s Companion—Fifteen Miles Round London'
A scarce and informative early Victorian walking map of London and its environs, extending fifteen miles from the capital. The Pedestrian’s Companion shows the principal roads radiating from London, with mileage measured from London Bridge, Westminster Bridge, and Whitechapel Church, and is delicately hand-coloured to delineate county boundaries and roads. A list of Waterman's fares from London bridge are listed below the map. First issued in 1822 by M.J. Godwin , and re-engraved by Stephen John Russell for E. Grattan in the mid-1830s, this example represents a later retail state, overprinted by Letts, Son & Co. of 8 Cornhill, with the earlier imprint of the printseller James Gilbert visible beneath, which appears to date this edition of the map at 1843.
