'The Tory Atlas of the World—The World: Political'
CONTENT WARNING: This satirical map contains racist, antisemitic, homophobic and other discriminatory slurs and stereotypes. They are not repeated in this description. Published across two pages of The Appallingly Disrespectful Spitting Image Book in 1985, this deliberately provocative map presents the world as imagined through a grotesquely exaggerated Thatcher-era “Tory” consciousness. Countries are renamed with insults, prejudices and political jokes; borders and proportions are manipulated; and Britain, its remaining territories and the Falkland Islands assume an importance wildly out of keeping with the country’s diminished post-imperial position. Not so much a map of the world as a map of a political imagination, it lampoons the insularity, xenophobia, imperial nostalgia and inflated sense of British importance that opponents associated with Conservatism during the 1980s. Its wonderfully absurd key divides the globe into categories including British territory, formerly British territory, territory that ought to be British and places that ought to be below sea level. The attitudes caricatured here contributed to a public image later crystallised in 2002, when Conservative Party chair Theresa May acknowledged that some people regarded the Conservatives as “the nasty party”—a label the party has arguably spent much of the subsequent quarter-century attempting to live down. The target of the satire is the ignorance and bigotry being represented rather than the peoples subjected to its labels, although its language remains genuinely offensive. Visually arresting, darkly comic and unmistakably of its period, the map is both a memorable artefact of Spitting Image and a powerful example of persuasive cartography: a map that exposes prejudice by adopting and exaggerating the worldview it seeks to ridicule.
