'Tibet and the Surrounding Regions. Compiled from the Latest Information'
The text notes explain that the Royal Geographical Society’s map of Tibet was compiled over many years and repeatedly revised to incorporate the most reliable and recent exploratory data, and is published at a scale sufficient to show all confirmed information. Its southern regions are based largely on the surveys of Indian clandestine "pundit" explorers, notably Nain Singh and Krishna, while northern and eastern areas draw on a combination of Indian Survey material, Russian sources, and the routes of British and French explorers. Where evidence was uncertain—especially in the high Chang-tang plateau—areas were deliberately left blank and marked “unexplored” rather than filled with conjecture. Walker notes that latitudes are generally dependable, but longitudes are less secure, being derived mainly from route traverses, with key control points adopted to reconcile differing observations.
