[Coast of Rhode Island & Massachusetts. Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket]
A scarce and impressive mid-19th century set of three large-format nautical charts depicting the southern coast of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Presented here as they appear when joined, the maps are offered for sale in unjoined condition, allowing them to be framed individually or combined to form a single, striking wall map. Rich in detail, the scale is sufficient to show individual buildings and city blocks, along with extensive depth soundings. Informative annotations and tables provide sailing directions, tidal information, lighthouse locations, magnetic variation, and current patterns. The triangulation and topography were carried out by a team under the direction of A.D. Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. Engraved by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, the set was published in the 1860 edition of the Superintendent’s Report.
