[Wesel to Oflag VII-C at Laufen]—Sheet Seven
One of a remarkable series of illustrated diary maps by 2nd Lieutenant Leslie C. Hunt of the East Surrey Regiment depicting the June 1940 march of British troops captured after the fall of Dunkirk from France through Belgium and Holland to German POW camp Oflag VII Cs. Drawn by Hunt in captivity, approved by German camp authorities and by British censors and published in Britain in 1941. The final 500-mile rail journey runs from Wesel and Hemer via Kassel, Frankfurt, Würzburg and Nuremberg to Oflag VII-C at Laufen near Salzburg, 2–7 July 1940. Hunt recalls a crowded train, lice-infested barracks and arrival after two and a half days. Cologne Cathedral, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, Bavarian landmarks and the prison castle create a striking pictorial conclusion.
