'Wreck Chart of the British Isles for 1853—Compiled from the Admiralty Register—Showing also the Present Life Boat Stations'
A striking mid-Victorian thematic chart of wrecks and serious maritime casualties around Britain and Ireland in 1853, compiled from the Admiralty Register and issued to Parliament as a House of Commons paper. Its dense scatter of symbols records the hazards of commercial sail and steam, with heavy concentrations off the east coast, in the Channel, around the Irish Sea and near exposed headlands. It also marks contemporary lifeboat stations, making the sheet both a record of disaster and a practical map of rescue provision, revealing where organised aid existed and where dangerous gaps remained. From the estate of Rex Cowan, the celebrated shipwreck hunter and researcher, it carries strong associative appeal as exactly the kind of Hansard/Parliamentary evidence useful for identifying wreck-rich waters and guiding archival investigation.
