伸びてゐる敵手 北太平洋 [The enemy’s expanding reach: the North Pacific]
Published in Shūkan Asahi on 25 January 1942, seven weeks after Pearl Harbor, this Japanese spread, headlined “The enemy’s expanding reach: the North Pacific”, shows how close American power had come. Heavy red lines put Attu 1,850 nautical miles from Japan, Dutch Harbor 2,340 and Seattle 4,500. American bases, airfields and naval ports dot Alaska and the Aleutians, while currents, the January 0°C isotherm and the iceberg limit back the article’s warning that the warm Kuroshio current keeps winter ice from sealing them off. Mocking American fears, the article still urges Japan to guard the north while advancing south, and not to think itself safe from air raids. Doolittle’s bombers struck Tokyo in April; in June Japan carried the war north, bombing Dutch Harbor and occupying Attu and Kiska. Richard Edes Harrison’s Pacific Arena made the same point to Americans that September. We have found no other example offered by a Western dealer.
