フィリッピン [Philippines]
Japanese flags planted on the invasion beaches turn this map of the Philippines into a declaration of conquest. It was published in Shūkan Asahi on 18 January 1942 for the special feature “The Philippines under the Japanese flag”. The flags stand at Aparri, Vigan, Lingayen, Lamon Bay, Legazpi and Davao, where the invaders came ashore in December 1941 before occupying Manila on 2 January. The triumph was premature. American and Filipino troops under MacArthur were still fighting on Bataan, which held out until April, and Corregidor did not fall until May. Shaded relief models the mountains, while roads and railways link Manila with the principal towns. We have found no other example offered by a Western dealer.
