Wyatt's alternative Regent Street 'plan of the New Street proposed…' 1815 map
SKU
'Reduction of the plan of the New Street proposed from Charing Cross to the Crown Estate, in Marylebone Park, with the late Mr. J.A. Wyatt's suggestions inserted thereon'
In the late 18th century, the West End of London was becoming congested due to a lack of large thoroughfares. John Fordyce, appointed Surveyor-General to the First Commissioner of Woods and Forests in 1793, concluded that a road should be constructed linking Carlton House (on Pall Mall) with what is now Regent's Park. What became known as Regent Street was eventually constructed after 1813 to the design of John Nash. This scarce map shows the rival scheme scheme of architect James Wyatt, with Nash's scheme superimposed. Where Nash's Regent Street runs west curving to the north from Piccadilly Circus, Wyatt's more direct scheme runs northward from the circus, incorporating Golden Square into a grand elongated square, before feeding into the existing Great Portland Street, rather than accessing the parallel Portland Place used by Nash's scheme
