'Sketch Map of the Countries referred to in the Zeno Narrative'
Pre-Columbian Discovery of America. Original lithographed map prepared under the direction of Richard Henry Major—map librarian of the British Museum from 1844 to 1880—and issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society, to accompany Major’s article, “The Site of the Lost Colony of Greenland Determined, and Pre-Columbian Discoveries of America Confirmed, from 14th-Century Documents.” The map visualises the geography described in the controversial Zeno Narrative, a purported late-14th-century account of North Atlantic voyages attributed to the Venetian Zeno brothers, who were said to have reached lands in North America beyond Greenland and Iceland, which they named Estotiland and Drogeo. In his accompanying essay, Major argued that the evidence “show[s] that at that period, which was a hundred years before the great voyage of Columbus across the Atlantic, there still existed remains of the ancient Scandinavian colonists in North America.” A leading Victorian authority on historical cartography, Major here exemplifies 19th-century scholarly efforts to reassess medieval sources and the possibility of pre-Columbian exploration of the North Atlantic.
