Ball, Robert Stawell

Sir Robert Stawell Ball FRS (1840-1913) was an Irish astronomer who founded the screw theory. He was Royal Astronomer of Ireland at Dunsink Observatory. Ball became something of a celebrity as a result of his popular lectures on science. He gave an estimated 2500 lectures between 1875 and 1910 in towns and cities across Britain and Ireland. His "Atlas of Astronomy" (1892) included a series of charts of the solar system, the planets, the moon, the stars and other astronomical phenomena.
