Brandon Hill rises above the western side of central Bristol, still marked by traces of the city's Civil War defences, and its prints show the open summit before Cabot Tower was built at the end of the nineteenth century. A prospect of 1789 takes in Brandon and Clifton hills from the south bank of the Avon, and a hand-coloured view of 1832 after Westall concentrates on Brandon Hill itself. Town plans of 1906, 1910 and 1927 place the hill among Clifton, Hotwells, Redcliffe and the central streets.
