Castleton is the Peak District village where Peak Cavern opens beneath the crag of Peveril Castle, and its gorge and limestone hills have drawn artists since the eighteenth century. The earliest print here, of 1779, shows Peak Cavern under its blunter old name, the Devil's Arse. Aikin's views of the 1790s and Westall's of the 1830s show the village in its setting, and Ernest Haslehust painted the gorge in 1920. Ward Lock's High Peak maps of 1897 and 1901 join Castleton with Buxton and Bakewell, and geological survey sheets of 1969 and 1975 map the ground around the village and Edale.
