Georgian road-book makers measured the miles to Cornhill-on-Tweed on the routes between Edinburgh and London, and their strip maps give it a firm place on the Border road. Taylor and Skinner's antique strip of 1776 follows the road from Edinburgh by Greenlaw, through Dalkeith, Lauder and Coldstream. Paterson's strip, in editions of 1785 and 1803, runs on the London to Edinburgh road by Coldstream, measured from Hicks's Hall, linking it with Wooler, Coldstream and Greenlaw.
