Cowley, on the eastern side of Oxford, began as a stage on the road into the city and became the home of the Morris motor works. Daniel Paterson's road strips of 1785 and 1803 follow the route from Reading through Wallingford, Dorchester and Cowley to Oxford, long before the suburb grew. A map of 1931 traces where the workers of the Morris factory lived, showing how far its workforce reached, and plates of 1873 show the proposed Incurable Hospital of St John the Evangelist and St Mary the Virgin at Cowley St John.
