Published in 1875, Alfred Haviland’s three large colour maps transformed official mortality statistics for 1851–60 into some of the earliest detailed national disease maps. Each classifies all 623 registration districts of England and Wales in six colour bands, with red indicating below-average mortality and blue above-average mortality. The heart-disease map, first issued in 1871, was an exceptionally early national study of a non-epidemic cause of death. The cancer map formed the centrepiece of what scholars identify as the first cancer atlas, helping establish cancer as a population-level public-health problem open to geographical investigation. The phthisis map charted female tuberculosis mortality seven years before Koch identified the tubercle bacillus, visualising one of Victorian Britain’s greatest causes of death on a national scale. Haviland’s correlations between mortality, terrain, climate and soils often mistook association for causation, but his comparative method was pioneering and anticipated modern spatial epidemiology and medical cartography.
