Read MoreEvery treaty, every broken promise and every reservation redrawn: these are the maps on which the United States government itself recorded the taking of Native American land. Compiled by Charles C. Royce for the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of American Ethnology and published in 1899, Indian Land Cessions in the United States paired 67 maps with a detailed historical schedule, and we offer the maps individually here, covering California, Florida, Texas, the Great Plains, the Great Lakes and almost every other state and territory. Each numbered, colour-washed parcel keys to the schedule’s account of the treaty, statute or executive order behind it, naming the nations involved and the dates on which their lands changed hands; the California sheets also record the lands promised under the unratified treaties of 1851–52. Our product titles name the principal nations on each map, so you can search by tribe as well as by state, and we supply the relevant schedule extracts as a PDF.
