North Weald Bassett is an Essex village in the farmland north of Epping, and its maps follow it from the Georgian countryside to the post-war street sheet. Nineteenth-century gazetteers described it as a village and parish served by the London and Ongar railway. Maps of 1786 and 1811 place it with Loughton, Theydon Bois, Theydon Garnon and Abridge among the settlements east of the Lea valley. Two vintage sheets of 1964 come much closer, one following the roads to Thornwood Common and Epping, the other the hamlets of Greensted Green, Tyler's Green and Toot Hill.
