Rainham sits on the Thames marshes of south Essex, where an old village, open riverside ground and new industrial suburbs met in the years between the wars. The vintage street maps of 1933 and 1937 show it from three sides: with Hornchurch, Upminster, Corbets Tey and Wennington; with Dagenham, South Hornchurch, Elm Park and the motor works; and with Purfleet, Aveley and Dartford across the river. A print of 1902 shows the Norman doorway of the parish church of St Helen and St Giles, alongside those of other Essex churches.
