Admirals, generals and statesmen painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792), first president of the Royal Academy, reached a new public through the engravings in this collection. They are later engravings after his compositions, published chiefly in the 1830s and 1850s, several of them by Tallis in his historical portrait series. Sitters include Lord Heathfield, Rodney, Granby, Mansfield and Lansdowne, with the scholar William Jones, and the group also takes in religious and imaginative subjects such as the Holy Family and women adorning the altar of Hymen.
