Twyford is an Itchen valley village south of Winchester, set among water meadows with downland rising around it, and it lay on the roads that carried travellers on to Southampton. Senex in 1719 and Kitchin in 1767 map the route from Bagshot and Farnham through Twyford towards Southampton, Romsey and Salisbury, and Paterson's strip maps of 1785 and 1803 follow the road from Winchester to Southampton. A print of 1909 shows Twyford Mill.
