Wickham Market grew up around its church and market square in the Deben valley, where the spire of All Saints' is still a landmark, and became a staging point on the turnpike from London to Great Yarmouth. The road maps of the eighteenth century follow travellers through it. Senex and Gardner both published the route from Colchester through Ipswich and Saxmundham to Beccles and Yarmouth in 1719, and Kitchin issued his version in 1767. Owen and Bowen's strip of 1753 follows the road from Colchester through Martlesham and Woodbridge to the village, and Paterson's maps of 1785 and 1803 trace the stages from Ipswich through Woodbridge to Saxmundham.
